The Concept

The Sekonride is a powersport vehicle simulator designed to be paired with a virtual reality headset like the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive.  With it, you will be able to ride your favourite snowmobile, ATV, trike, or PWC anytime, anywhere (real or not) with all of your friends and without polluting, eroding soil, making noise, or even leaving home!

The Background

Virtual reality is coming this year, and it will pick up momentum really fast. I think that personal vehicle simulators paired with those devices will become a huge market too. I thought about creating the Sekonride because I love powersports, but my free time has taken a plunge during the last ten years (kids!), so I thought I could use VR to ride from home whenever I could find a few hours to spare. I would still ride real machines, but the Sekonride would open up a new world without boundaries.

How It Works

To conceptualize the images of the Sekonride, Jan Bujnak designed a neutral type of machine, but buyers might prefer a specific vehicle configuration/ergonomy (Snowmobile, Personal watercraft, ATV, Trike, etc.), and the simulator could be easily built from existing powersport parts.

To rapidly assemble a prototype, I would pick a model manufactured by BRP (Ski-Doo, Sea-Doo, Can-Am etc.) and take out the unnecessary mechanical parts, like the fuel tank, air box, engines, wheels or skis, etc. The knock-down models would then be used to build the simulator.

Four actuators on the vehicle would simulate the up and down movement and leaning. I would approach D-BOX technologies to develop this sub assembly since they already make all sorts of flight, defense, and automotive simulators. They have all the necessary expertise to integrate actuators, and they have a supplier network in place.

To test the Sekonride in different worlds, I would approach companies like UBISOFT and Valve software who are major players in the gaming industry, as well as Linden Labs, who is currently building virtual worlds. These content creators could integrate the Sekonride simulators in their games so each time you ride a straddle-type machine in them you would be able to use your simulator.

What It’s Used For

Imagine if you could invite friends or fellow players to explore the Noctis Labyrinthus formation on Planet Mars on an ATV this afternoon without leaving their homes? Or if you could take a few hours to ride the Amazon river on a personal watercraft and then jump down the Niagara falls just for fun? You could also use the Sekonride to test and feel the 2018 Spyder model in a focus group at your powersport dealership!

In my opinion, the question is not if there is a market for powersports simulators, but rather who will seize it first?

The ‘pros’ are obvious: you save time, you can explore any world (real or virtual), you are being eco-friendly and you can ride multiple machines with one simulator. Of course VR will never beat the real thing, but I don’t think we should ignore it.


The Sekonride concept was developed in February 2016 by Charles Bombardier in collaboration with Jan Bujnak, an industrial designer from the Slovak Republic. Jan graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava and works as a freelance designer. Jan has also produced the concept images for the Typhon personal hovercraft and the Wemotaci hydrogen powered snowmobile.
